I just got my Verizon EVDO service working under Vista. I'm using a Kyocera KPC650 PC card to connect to Verizon.
It took me awhile to get the KPC650 installed, because as of today Windows Update does not provide a driver for it.
Fortunately Keith Comb has blogged some great instructions on how to get EVDO working in Vista.
Here's a recap:
* Copy the Verizon VZAccess installer from the CD you got with your Kyocera card to your harddrive.
* Right click on the VZAccess file name and select "Properties" in the context menu that appears. In the Properties Window, select the Compatibility tab and check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Click OK.
* Right click on the VZAccess file name again and run the program by selecting "Run as administrator".
* This begins the VZAccess install program. It will get all the way up to the point where it asks you to install the PC card. Once you do this Windows will ask you at the same time for the driver for the card. Let Windows try to find it, but it won't. Then ask Windows to give you install options, which will give you a chance to browse to a driver file. Simply navigate the window that appears to: program files\verizon wireless\vzaccess manager\drivers\650. Vista should indicate a successful install. At this point you can exit out of VZAccess, because as Keith points out, you don't need it. (Actually, on my system the first install didn't work, I had to reboot and then when I logged on the card was recognized and it gave me a chance to point to the driver file as mentioned above.
* Next, Keith shows in very good detail how to create a dial up connection to connect to the Internet rather than using VZAccess. I decided to go this route too.
The one thing I'm not sure of now is how to turn off the power to the KPC650 after I disconnect from the Internet. The VZAccess program had an option to do this. Now I have to pull the card when I'm done. I've also noticed as Keith indicates, that sometimes when I insert the PC card that it automatically isn't detected and turned on. When this happens I have to reboot. (Simply logging off doesn't seem to help.)
