Mary Jo Foley: "After all, as I mentioned last week, it looks like Microsoft won't be releasing Service Pack 2 for Windows XP until mid-year. An update of Windows XP for the Tablet PC and another for Media Center PCs are on tap for the same time. But will that be enough to keep users satisfied with (let alone excited about) Windows until Longhorn client ships in the 2005+ timeframe."
I hope Microsoft doesn't heavily promote the Tablet PC update until they get close. All we need is another Centrino-style stall in the market.
In the meantime, Microsoft needs to spend all its non-development energy illustrating the value of the Tablet PC to everyone that'll listen and working with developers to create stunning Tablet PC apps.
Of course, if Microsoft is going to release new APIs and any new UI standards for the stylus I hope the new Tablet developers get enough advance notice to be able to stay in sync.
Doesn't this sound contradictory to the "don't promote" advice I gave earlier? Not really. Just give us developers some boring specs or sample apps that we can develop to. No buzz. Just code. Consumers won't be that interested and we can do our best to dazzle the world with the best Tablet PC apps ever.
