Movie Sizzle

The Tux Reports Network has several entertainment sites but nothing dedicated to movies. Today, movie sizzle opened for beta testing.

Movie Sizzle is built around Drupal and the Drigg module. Registered members submit links to movies and movie reviews, comment on movies, and vote movies up or down.

TinyMCE Installed on ComputerViews

In order to ensure a good user experience, TinyMCE was installed on ComputerViews.

TinyMCE is a platform independent web based Javascript HTML WYSIWYG editor control released as Open Source under LGPL by Moxiecode Systems AB. It has the ability to convert HTML TEXTAREA fields or other HTML elements to editor instances. TinyMCE is very easy to integrate into other Content Management Systems.

vBulletin 3.7.0 Beta 2

Tux Reports was the first Linux site of the network. After many revisions, as well as starts and stops, the site has been rather dormant. The reviews, wiki, and thousands of articles were removed several years ago. The other day, the old forums were installed with the backup of data from 2003.

Today, the second beta version of vBulletin 3.7.0 was installed. This version has some social networking features and allows uploads of photos.

Wacky Whacks

I’m Wacky is now online but content is missing. This is a drupal test site. Maybe the site is more than a test site. The site is a test of an idea for people to share ‘duh’ moments. No images are used on this site - and this will be changed soon.

Computer Views is also coming along nicely. The cron job is set for the RSS feeds from other Tux Reports sites. A unique theme must be built - but all in time.

Insane Politics

Work on Insane Politics continued this morning. The RSS Feed for Democratic Chat now loads as Frontpage News for IP.

Sadly, the election might be over by the time the site is open for business.

Computer Views: Playing with Drupal

Many newspapers are using Drupal to provide visitors with an excellent experience. Computer Views is the first attempt to install Drupal and configure the site for joining different TRN technology sites.

New Domains and Some Changes

Lora requested a few domains to be added to the network.

Loren’s blog (Incremental Blogger) was moved to a new domain, www.lorenheiny.com and appears to be working. There is a glitch with YouTube videos on WordPress 2.3 but we found a work around until there

is a fix.

UMPC Buzz appears to be working fine. The aliases are not set properly, yet.

Cleaning Up After A Hacker

There is nothing worse than people who invade someone else’s area. We all have “personal space” and someone who gets too close is annoying. Along this line of thought, someone who breaks into a home or business is considered by society to be a robber. Hacking is breaking and entering. Yet, some kids (and adults) do not understand that hacking is not a sport or something to do for enjoyment. They do not consider the cost. Yes, the harm is costly - in time, energy, and resources.

One of the Windows Server was hacked (again): housing UMPC Buzz, Tablet PC Blogs, What Is New and about 30 other domains. I was locked out and the hosting company was demanding money that seemed inappropriate. The technicians told many stories and failed to follow through with their promises. After frustrating hours (days - 2 weekends in a row) of attempting to get to the server, I opted to change the dns for What Is New and use a backup site and server.

As if this was not enough, the database for Technology Questions was corrupt and the site failed to load. This site has the highest traffic and so my attention turned to it. The hosting company is paid to backup the site daily. Instead, the backup was 2 weeks old. Three days of attention passed and the database was restored but the site didn’t work. Files were corrupt, templates were destroyed, and cron jobs were going wild. Little by little (and with the help of vBulletin) the site was restored.

In the meantime, a search for another way to manage the servers started. Auto Backup for MySQL by SwordSky Software was purchased and databases are remotely downloaded to a local drive. This should help manage the Linux boxes.

Yet, the Windows Servers remain a challenge. A search continues to find a way to remotely manage these sites so that my life is not spent cleaning up after intruders and rude people who have nothing better to do … (insert profanity).

Over 100 GB

A new milestone was reached this month. According to the traffic reports for sites housed on the Linux box, over 109 GB of digital information has moved from the websites. This only represents the Linux sites. The Windows sites were doing equally well.

The surprise is Insane Politics reaching into the top 10. With 60 active domains, this site is far from being organized. Maybe it is time to start organizing it …
